Budget Travel Korea | Seoul | Dinner @ Mr. Kebab

Image
After checking in and chatting for so long with our hosts at Eid Guesthouse in Itaewon , we were finally ready to check out Seoul on our first evening there. We wanted to head out to Gangnam district first, but we were so famished as we missed lunch and it was already 6pm.  Since we stayed just a few minutes walk from the Seoul Mosque, there were actually so many halal restaurants to choose from that are located along the way from our stay towards the Itaewon subway station; so we just stopped by at a Mr. Kebab shop because we were dying for some french fries ^^ Between Itaewon station exit 3 and the Seoul Mosque, you'll find 2 Mr. Kebab branches, we went to the one on the hill slope (the second branch you'll find if you come from the subway). The setup was simple and small, but pretty cozy and private as they can only seat about 10 people (or less) at a time; however it is this big welcoming smile that somewhat attracts customers; Korean speaking Turkish co...

Budget Travel Indonesia | Banda Aceh | Bubur Ayam Jakarta

Image
Despite the name, we had this breakkie in downtown Banda Aceh, and not Jakarta ha ha .. I imagine this must be a popular dish in the latter that it has made its way wayyy to the west of Sumatera. Before heading to the airport on our last day here, we walked out into the street in front of our hotel  practically just one minute walk across the road to find a friendly street breakfast place. It was barely 7am but we were lucky that one stall has already opened; they sell Bubur Ayam Jakarta. It's basically rice porridge served with shreds of chicken meat, roasted peanut, fried shallots, some deep-fried crackers with chicken broth and a special green chili sauce. The chicken broth and chili sauce were kept in containers, you can pour or drizzle them to your taste Truth to be told, I'm not a fan of rice porridge but surprisingly I enjoyed this one very much.  Check out the humble setup of this street joint; We sat next to a friendly Acehnese couple, pea...

Food | Dine Out | 2 Things I love @ Nando's

Image
My first time dining at a Nando's restaurant was circa 1999-2000 ; the only menu I liked back then used to be the burger and that's hugely because they served fries with it (I'm a sucker for deep-fried foods) =D I didn't find their other grilled chicken menu appetizing either because they were too dry for my liking so that explains why I stopped going there only after a few visits (read: healthy meals are not at the top of my list either he he) ... until my recent stay at  Swiss Garden hotel in Melaka with my mom and sister when we had our lunch at a new shopping mall attached to the hotel, The Shore. We only found 2 halal restaurants there which were Nando's and a sushi place and were too hungry to explore if there were anymore halal joints tucked in the corners of the top floor.  So we just settled for Nando's coz our mom doesn't eat sushi. Long story short, I ordered their Caramel Cheese Cake for dessert and that alone has managed to make ...

Food | Dine Out | Murtabak Mengkasar @ Pekan, Pahang

Image
This is one famous murtabak . It was showcased in a few newspapers and even the price don't scare customers away =D The price tag for special and regular murtabak here What is murtabak ? Lemme see, I would describe it as a type of roti canai (famous malaysian staple)  with a lot of minced meat filling coz the roti pastry is the same hehe. Murtabak Mengkasar  can be considered a food landmark in the huge district of Pekan, in the east-coast state of Pahang, Malaysia. I actually first knew about it after reading an article in a national newspaper. The shop is located about less than 100m from the arch/gate on Sultan Abu Bakar Street, you won't miss it. To justify the price tags, check out how they are made .. Contrary to most murtabak you could find anywhere, they use the roti pastry on the inside and out ..  The roti pastries that were prepared ahead of opening time The cook poured a mixture of minced meat, eggs, herbs and spi...

Budget Travel Indonesia | Pulau Weh (Sabang) | Rujak Aceh with A View

Image
On our way back to Sumur Tiga beach from snorkeling at Iboih , we stopped by at a small coffee place on the roadside. It's a hilly area and the stall is right on top of a cliff. The stall may look like it has nothing much to offer but I found it to be one of the best places on Weh island to sample local snacks like rujak Aceh (Aceh fruit salad with special spicy peanut sauce) with a cup of kupi Aceh (Aceh black coffee) because the view is just priceless .. In Malaysia rujak is spelled as rojak and it means 'a mix of many things', usually a variety of vegetables and fruits served in many types of spicy sauces. Sometimes,  there are shrimp fritters and other fried ingredients added to the mix. So there can be many varieties of rojak .  I consider rojak as a salad dish but with very heavy dressing .. more like gravy actually hehe. I believe the same applies in Indonesia. The owner of the shop made our rujak by first preparing the spicy peanut d...

Budget Travel Korea | Busan | Samarkand Halal Uzbekistan Food Restaurant

Image
After almost 3 days of instant rice, sambal ikan bilis  (dried anchovies cooked with  chili ) and raw seafood in Jeju , I think we deserved this huge dinner in Busan =D. The restaurant is called Samarkand, which just so happened to be conveniently located about only 50 metres away from our motel in Busan China Town; basically on the same row.  They serve halal Uzbekistan dishes which were mostly deep-fried, grilled meat that comes with french fries - just my kinda food =D .. and oh yeah, they also have a good selection of desserts.  The selections in the menu look really good and even though they were printed in Korean and cyrillic  (Russian alphabet) only, I believe you could do no wrong  when it comes to any deep-fried / grilled food lol.  We went for a plate of grilled beef, some kind of chicken schnitzel (both came with fries) and a plate of deep-fried beef dumplings which look pretty much like mandu , Korean dumplin...

Budget Travel Korea | Seoul | Eid 이드 Halal Korean Food Restaurant

Image
Eid 이드 Halal Korean Food Restaurant is located in the famous 'foreigner neighbourhood' of Seoul - Itaewon. It's owned by a Korean Muslim family and was opened on 13.10.2014. Nowadays, Eid is becoming a popular 'go-to' halal joint for Muslim backpackers from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore; mainly because of the authenticity of the food served as m ost of the halal food you'd find in Korea would be kebabs and foods served in Indian/ Arab/ Middle East restaurants. I mean, if you would prefer to have certified halal Korean food made by the locals, this should be in your Korea itinerary ^^ With Saad the owner That's the front of the restaurant, it's close every Monday.  Because we stayed at Eid's new guesthouse just a minute away on foot from the restaurant, we waited there to be fetched by the owner, Saad when we arrived from Incheon airport. We dined at the restaurant on another day instead and enjoyed a 10% discount as guests of the...
